KelTec SU-16
The future son-in-law has his eye on a SU-16. I've never handled one, nor personally know anyone that has. Just looking the rifle on the web, I've told him "buy a real rifle". Am I off-base here? Does any GIMer own or shot one and would share his/her experience with the weapon? I just don't want the kid to blow his FRNs on a POS.
Sorry, I'm sure this topic has been previously discussed, didn't have much luck with a search. |

Re: KelTec SU-16
I have a PLR-16 and I am a little disappointed with it so far. I took mine out two weeks ago with a few other rifles / pistols. After I would fire a round it would not pick up the next round. I could manually cycle it and it would pick up a round but it just would not pick it up on it's own.
I have since read that these can be finicky depending on what magazines you use. Since the majority of my magazines are the top of the line HK German made magazines I was thinking WTF. I did not bring the plastic junk 10 rd they sent with the pistol or any of my others as I had packed light. Next time I go I will bring a variety and try them all out. On a side note after shooting 4 - 5 rounds ( manually cycling ) out of each of the 5 mags I dropped the mags from my PLR-16 and shot the rest of them with my RRA LAR-15 which has 0 issues. I will give the PLR-16 another try (Yes i bought it new) but if it still gives me trouble with the other mags it's gonna be sold fast. http://www.arcimboldeb.com/img/eventi/armi2/14.jpg This is not a photo of mine, but mine is identical accessory wise. |

Re: KelTec SU-16
I don't know about their rifles but I own a p-11 and have had zero issues with it. I'd like to get a su 16 D model

Re: KelTec SU-16
I liked my first PLR-16 so much I bought a second. It is basically a short SU-16. They have a piston pushing the bolt back like an AK.

Re: KelTec SU-16
I had one and sold it for about a $200 loss just to move it along. Those magazine slots on the stock don't work worth a crap. The little pin that pushes out to break the folding stock is just begging to get lost. I took the money and bought a mini 14, which I know have some problems but still much preferable in my opinion.

Re: KelTec SU-16
He won't regret it. I love mine. Easy to clean, easy to break down, and has accuracy on par with an average AR15. It uses standard AR15/M16 magazines. Mine is the CA version. I prefer the sights and it holds an extra 30rd mag in the stock.
It is not a battle rifle, but will hold up well to any reasonable use. It is much more sturdy than you would think. I have never had any FTF/FTE's after a few hundred rounds. It is short and easy to point. I would like a better sling system than the offering from keltec. I will be adding an eotech to mine after christmas. You can get a pistol grip and compact forend as well, but I prefer it in stock configuration. The RFB is another fine rifle. I don't own one but a friend of mine lives near their plant in Florida and he loves his. Right now the RFB only comes in .308, but there is a rumor of other calibers to come. |

Re: KelTec SU-16
I just bought a Kel Tec PLR 22 basically the PLR 16 that shoots .22LR. Anyone have info on dependability? I pick it up on Tuesday and have always heard great things about the company but am kinda worried after reading the above comment about the PLR 16. I have a P32 that works great so hopefully the above mentioned gun is a fluke.

Re: KelTec SU-16
I looked at buying a plr-16 (the .22 caliber doesn't interest me) but I hear lots of complaints, units have to be sent back to be fixed. Enough problems that I've backed off the model.
I might go carbon 15 from bushmaster. I don't see many complaints there. |
Re: KelTec SU-16
Personally I would pick a AR15 over anything like the SU16 .
Think of it this way pick a battle proven rifle not a commercial offering that happens to use the same magazine, Many different configurations are possible. Get the AR15 lower first and then configure it either as you desire or in according with your state law depending on what state you live in. Then find the barrelled upper that floats your boat, Lots of different calibers are available from the Std .223 to the 5.7x28 round and many more in between. |

#1 if you use the self centering mags it will work fine (i found some 20rnd mags do the centering thing) #2 you can open up the frounts of the feed lips on your mags so the bullet has a slightly higher angle of attack from the mag to the reciever #3 you can polish the edges of the feed ramps ...if you hand cycle some bullets through you will see markings on the bullets where the feed ramp edges are slightly catching the bullets and causeing the miss feed. very reliable once you get the mag issue fixed...fun gun to shoot also... |

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...7/DSC_5531.jpg I was shooting Winchester 55 Gr 5.56 FMJ. I guess about 25-30 rounds through the gun now all manually cycled. Held it a few different ways, I had the same thought. Nothing helped. I will try some different mags next time see how it goes. The photos above were the mags I had with me. Actually I had one old Bushmaster 30 rd mag with me but it did the same thing. It would eject the shell of the fired round (most of the time) but would not pick up the next one. I'm going to give the 10 rd that came with the pistol a try next time as well as a couple of C-mags that I bought. |
Re: KelTec SU-16
Maybe also try some hot-loaded Federal XM193...might help cycle more robustly.

Re: KelTec SU-16
I bought a Kel Tec p40 in 40 S&W had the same feed problem, thought it might be weak wrist, finally figured it out, the slide where the top of the hammer rubs as the slide moves back was seen thru a loop as being very roughly machined, I took a little emery cloth and some light machine oil and polished the underside of the slide, never had any feed problems since, love the little gun, is my main carry piece, and feeds and shoots very accurate.
